shelter protecting the hive entrance and landing board.<\/strong><\/h4><div>If you purchase a commercially manufactured hive, it will come with a canopy for the entrance and a landing board.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>The purpose of the canopy is to protect the flap and the entrance from rainfall. This will extend its lifespan. Furthermore, it will prevent a situation where rain enters between the flap (the movable part of the flap) and the flap body, and the resulting capillary forces prevent the bumblebees from opening the flap.<\/div><p><b>Commercially manufactured canopies <\/b>but sometimes they have the following <b>shortcomings<\/b>:<\/p><ul><li>They are small and don't cover what they should, even light rain will wet the flap<\/li><li>it breaks and cracks easily<\/li><li>when they are fitted into the groove in the flap they can be removed easily, but they sometimes don't hold well in the groove and the wind blows them away<\/li><li>when they are fitted into the groove in the flap, water gets into the groove and the flap body then deforms<\/li><li>The price of a new cover starts from 40 CZK and up (+ postage).<\/li><\/ul><p>That's why <strong>designed a canopy<\/strong>, which has the following advantages:<\/p><ul><li>You can easily make it yourself<\/li><li>It's bigger and better, it covers the flap and the grating.<\/li><li>water runs off it easily<\/li><li>It is firmly attached to the hive, but by loosening one screw, you can easily separate it from the hive.<\/li><li>It's made of a flexible material that won't break easily with handling or accidental contact, yet it holds its shape well.\u00a0<\/li><li>It's transparent and doesn't obstruct the view or photography of the entrance hole<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><strong>We were inspired by Eva Kal\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1<\/strong>. His\/Her grates are located indoors (garage), and the louvres are outside the garage on the wall. He\/She protects them by making a canopy for them out of a half-sized bucket.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>This is a very effective solution, but we adapted it for canopies mounted on beehives. However, the same principle can be used for flaps on walls. Feel free to adapt it to your needs and production capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Material<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A sheet of clear polycarbonate up to 1mm thick, so the material can be cold-bent. <br>(A thickness of 0.75mm was used here)<\/li>\n<li>A cutting board made from quality wood, or boards made from quality plywood up to a thickness of around 20mm (do not use plywood, OSB board, or other materials that will not withstand the weather).<\/li>\n<li>At least 3 small wood screws around 10mm in length<\/li>\n<li>1 countersunk screw 30-40mm length<\/li>\n<li>Acrylic exterior paint<\/li>\n<li>Quality adhesive tape<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Proceed<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>make your own<strong> Canopy bracket<\/strong> \u2013 adjust the chopping board into the shape according to the attached sketch \u2013 adjust the dimensions according to your workspace so that it does not exceed its outline<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Choose the radius of the top side according to your own discretion and taste.
