About the project – introduction
We are pleased that we have managed to involve more entities who are united by a common interest – to do something for nature in cities and to light the torch of enthusiasm in the younger generation, who will carry it forward.

Project aims and content
The school's long-term goal is to support research-based education in Brotherly School and the expansion of outdoor teaching possibilities.
- The aim of the project is therefore
Pasture expansion for insect pollinators – support for improving their status - Education and dissemination of information about insect pollinators – creation of educational information panels to popularise the topic of insect pollinators: bumblebees, solitary bees (social bees), honey bees
- operation club dedicated to the topic of insect pollinators.
Project Contents
The project's content involves running a club dedicated to the care of school bee colonies, with an emphasis on the care of surrounding greenery and maximising the ecological capacity of the school garden, considering the preservation of biodiversity for other pollinating insects such as bumblebees and solitary bees.
In cooperation with experts, we want to raise awareness of the topic among school teaching staff, pupils' parents, residents of Prague 7, and the general public who only pass through Prague 7.
By organising lectures, ecological educational programmes, fieldwork on the grounds (parental work parties), and the creation of educational information boards, we aim to extend our influence beyond the school grounds and serve as an example of good practice where a community of people collectively shapes and cares for a place that is important to them at a certain stage of life.
The association is the expert consultant for the creation of educational materials and the organisation of lectures for adults in this project. Bumblebees PLUS, registered association. but also Prague Meadow.
The electronic versions of the created educational materials will be offered free of charge to other schools, educational institutions and the public for non-commercial use on the website Sister schools to the association Bumblebees PLUS.

Julie
Julie Včeláková Cottage
Time spent in nature has always been important to me, even though its form has changed over the years.
With the birth of my two children, time spent outdoors felt even more important.
My name led me to bees; from childhood, they called me „Little Bee.“ But I only got involved with the living ones with my children.
Thanks to Martin Semerád, founder of the Srdcevčele association and my first beekeeping teacher.
Together we ran beekeeping camps for children, and I enjoyed that. Coming up with games, trails and organising.
Since 2021, I have been working as an coordinator and educator for environmental education at the EKODOMOV organisation.
Wojciech
Vojtěch Koštíř Prague Meadow
He studies biology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University. In 2016, he co-founded the association Pražská pastvina (Prague Pasture), which combines community grazing of sheep and goats with the care of valuable protected areas. Today the association also focuses on the species protection of butterflies (e.g. Meadow Brown or Rock Grayling) and the care of an old orchard with a community apiary.
He also works as an editor for the TV show „Nedej se!“ (Don't Give Up!), where he highlights significant environmental issues and causes. He manages to inspire young people interested in biology about nature through lectures and excursions for high school students.
Andrew
Ondřej Hercog – Bumblebees PLUS z.s.
I work in IT and information security. I am actively involved in nature conservation and promotion.
He has been interested in nature since childhood. Although he chose a technical education and career for his life, he is increasingly returning to nature, and bumblebees are one of the ways he does this.
He is a founding member of the group and subsequently the association Čmeláci PLUS z.s., of which he is also the chairman. He actively promotes the association's activities in public and in the media.
How did it start?
If you don't know, just ask the source: „Julie, please tell us how you came up with the idea to launch this project, and it's immediately clear.
Julie replied: „When our daughter started attending the Brethren School, I was captivated by the garden, a former park near the station. It felt like paradise to me.”.
I immediately had an idea for an outdoor classroom about beehives, and since the headmaster had had the same wish for a long time, within a year there were hives there, thanks to Vojta Koštíř from Pražská pastvina.
Thanks to my friendship with the experienced bumblebee keeper, Jaromír Čížek, I have been captivated by these furry pollinators with a range of super abilities for a few years now.
So it felt natural to me that pupils at school and passers-by should also learn about the importance of a diverse pollinator population.
Thanks for the work Parents' Association Bratrská Perennial and herb beds were established in the academic year 2023/2024. Thanks to them, we were already able to observe more pollinators on coneflowers this summer: hummingbird hawk-moths, bumblebees, butterflies, and honeybees.
This project therefore naturally builds on previous initiatives, through which we aim to revitalise the garden and foster a blooming oasis of greenery at the school.“
Julie understatedly kept quiet about the work that involved paperwork and project applications.
„Hello Ondra, how's it going?“ we ask.
Ondra is also clear: “If someone like my friend Jaromír approaches you and offers cooperation with someone named Včeláková, then there’s nothing to discuss. No, seriously – after just a moment on the phone with Julie, it was clear that there was chemistry. What's more, Vojta was already involved, so it happened quickly and we sealed the deal.„
But our curiosity gets the better of us, so we ask Vojta how he met Julia.
Vojta pauses and remembers: “Rostislav, the director of the Brotherhood School, and I already knew each other. When Julie came with the bees, he approached me and asked if I could bring a few colonies. Well, and now I’m happy that it’s not just about setting up hives somewhere, but that we are also creating a space for the life not only of bees, but especially of wild pollinators. We will soon be sowing a meadow, the mixture is being tailored for bumblebees and for the garden, so hopefully, within two years, a beautiful meadow with oxeye daisies, sages, and also greater knapweed, which is literally a magnet for bumblebees, will bloom there.„
So you see, people often meet by chance and by the hand of fate. But that doesn't mean they won't manage to launch and realise something interesting.

Bratrská Primary School
Who are we?
We are a church primary school of a family type with an extended arts education for pupils in years 1 to 8.
At our school, we create a safe environment for children, where they have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. We encourage their individuality and respect their personalities. The school strives for open communication with children and parents, with whom we hold regular meetings.
Teaching takes place in 9 core classes. In years 1 to 9, we teach according to our own school educational programme “For Everyone’s Life”.

28/9/2024 – We're starting!
Today we finally met up – Julie, Ondra, and Vojta.
We went through the garden at ŽS Bratrská and discussed plans. The director also arrived to get acquainted with us.
We are preparing a proposal for reseeding the garden. We have also agreed to supplement the garden with shrubs.
Vojta is taking responsibility for the seed, preparing information signs for the public, and lectures.
Vojta will select shrubs and mark out areas for honey-producing plants on the plan.
We are planning the dates for our garden events, but also seminars.
Ondra photographed the current state of the garden so that we have a comparison with how it will look here next year.

PS. Vojta is a sworn enemy of signs, so hopefully it'll go through 😀

Vojta is already choosing seeds, bushes and trees for the plot. It might not seem like it, but it's a lot of work.
We want to sow geese on the plot and they won't wait – they must be in the ground before the frosts. Perhaps in the spring we will see similar scenes – in the centre of Prague, a stone's throw from the Metro station.

Hooray – Julie has secured a venue for our first lecture. She's also made a poster, so we're starting with active promotion.
But we are also preparing a lecture, which Vojta will lead, and you won't want to miss that. Did you know that Vojta has already spoken in the Senate in the Czech Republic and it didn't matter at all that he wasn't wearing a suit and tie, but just his famous t-shirt?

We are preparing for the first events. Work will begin in the garden next week. Julie reports that the seedlings and seeds are ready.
Vojta will also arrange more, although it’s more complicated for him now – his family grew last week!

Vojta brought plant seedlings that we will use to supplement the garden. Julie and the children stored them, and the children will water them so they last until we place them.

Julie forked part of the garden to get it ready for sowing. The children will help with the raking, it's a project for them and it's good that we're managing to get them involved.
After sowing, the seeds are covered with a net, otherwise the pigeons would feed on them there, and that's not really our goal in the project 😀

With the children it goes quickly – they're eager to get to work and it's done straight away. Vojta will be pleased.
We gathered the cut-off parts and secured netting over the sown area to protect it from birds. We're not going to feed them the precious seeds, are we?

Today there was a lecture about bumblebees. Julie and Ondra gave the lecture.
The participants learned about our project, the motivation behind starting it, and our plans from Julie. Ondra then went on to talk about bumblebees, their lives, and how we can help them.
Even though there weren't many participants, those who came were great and active.
We are planning the next lecture for spring, ideally directly in the garden.
Thanks to the Prague 7 Municipal District Council for the opportunity to use their beautiful premises.

It's cold, but we're not sleeping. Vojta and Julie are working on information boards for the project. Well… Vojta has a rash from the word „information boards“, but what won't he do for Julie...

Last week we finished making smaller holes in the insect hotel „At the Old Totem.“. Someone did take one of the chains it was secured with, but it's still standing firm.
Someone was clearly off the chain. But maybe someone will get chained up soon....

This is what it looks like at the moment – hooray, the bulbs are already coming up out of the ground.
We don't know about the bushes, planted last year.
Réva doesn't look like much, she wasn't in good condition when I brought her, but we'll give her a chance.
I'd like to put some protection around those bushes so the children don't accidentally step on them.
Oh dear - the totem is on the ground. They've gradually stolen both chains. So I'm thinking of using a rope. That shouldn't tempt anyone, hopefully.

I'm also checking the nets that protect the sown areas, and thankfully, that's all good too.

Our gang's back in action at last!
The work party did have to be postponed by a week due to rain and snow. But the hardy chaps from Pražská pastvina built us a two-chamber composter even in this bad weather. Thanks to this, we will reduce our carbon footprint – the cut grass will end up on the land and won't be transported anywhere.
Vojta promises that in time there will also be chafers larvae in the compost, so we'll have to figure out what we'll feed them with here then.
Composters might find other uses too – instead of staying after school, the children would remain in the composter. I found that they would probably really enjoy that.
We're embarking on a cupboard inspection, it's an adventure for everyone!
We peeked at the reserves of a deceased bee colony with the children and remembered food sources in early spring. The children enjoy it, does it give us energy, or is it the sap of spring?

We postponed our original plans for this event because the weather wasn't in our favour. Vojta and Matouš are seasoned, so they were hard at work here last week. We, who are of school age and parents, came today.
Many thanks to all parents and pupils for the care they’ve put into the school garden – great work
We raked up the remaining leaves, weeded the perennial beds, installed edging for the annual flower beds, beautifully demarcated the sown areas of nectar- and pollen-rich plants, gave new handles for the children's hoes, installed information panels about pollinating insects, edged the bushes planted in autumn, and sowed vetch.

Good news!
I'm preparing a bee house (or rather, a bumblebee house) for the garden in Radlice. As it looks, a bumblebee has settled in it and is returning. This is recognisable by a mark at the entrance hole. If it's returning, it will throw the mark out. In the photo is the flap of the bee house for Bratrská Primary School, and hurrah – the mark is repeatedly outside!

I haven't seen her yet, so at least watch the video to see what it looks like. We'll be replacing it with a video of our little queen soon.

I was negotiating a bumblebee project in Troja, and the route happened to lead me to Bratská. The garden was closed, the children were shut in their classrooms, and I had to make do with being locked in the office...
At least I was pleased to see how nicely the garden is taking off and how much work has been put into it.

Our queen bumblebee has already settled into the hive and is spending the night there. This means that if all goes well, she could have her first helpers within a month – little workers. However, it's still a long way off and it doesn't always work out.
Do you know how bumblebees work? If not, just look at the bumblebee website and to the page about the bumblebee life cycle.
Julie's been given a task – to choose a name for this pretty thing with the kids from school. So, will you join in with your suggestions? If you leave it to Ondra, be warned – he already knows what he's going to suggest!
And friends, a heads-up – Julie and I have just agreed to have the christening – the bumblebee one, that is!!!

Although it's cold outside, we'll warm ourselves with work. It's growing nicely here – vines, akebia, staphylea, and kerria.

The bumblebees are ready, the workers are bringing in pollen at full speed. I'm still saying goodbye to them, and from tomorrow they will be living in the garden of ZŠ Bratrská.

Bumblebees arrived in the school garden today!
We had planned it as a campfire chat, but the weather wasn't in our favour in the end, so we met in the yurt.
There weren't many children, but still, there were a lot of very interesting questions. Parents and other attendees also asked questions.
The weather improved, so we then went out and installed the spook.
We chatted there for a long time and watched the first flights of the bumblebee workers. They have to orient themselves first so they can find their way home. That also worked out, so it was a nice day and a joy for everyone.

Everything is okay, but I've adjusted the hive suspension so that they can open their caps more easily and don't lose their pollen baskets.

Even Year 5 pupils no longer have doubts about the bumblebees' superpowers.
He was so enthusiastic about the yellow rattle, especially when I explained to them that it's not something on a hat, but a semi-parasitic grass that bumblebees fly around.

As part of the project, we literally went to a Prague meadow. This beautiful place is returning to its former state when intensive grazing took place here, which led to a large number of steppe plants, as well as insects, occurring here. Enthusiasts from ČSOP Pražská pastvina have created a small, yet significant, paradise here through managed grazing and clearing of invasive trees.
We had beautiful weather and enjoyed the fresh air. Our great guide Vojta enjoyed it too. Why was he glad for the fresh air? Well... ask him! You can tell from the last photograph. 😀
Vojta is at home here. Furthermore, he was one of the first to start working here once and, among other things, this is why he is the right guide for this beautiful place.

Hooray, our article has been published in Prague EVVOluce. This is an electronic magazine about environmental education in Prague. It's intended for everyone :). The general public, parents, teachers, but also employees of eco-centres and officials. It should contain everything that is currently happening in Prague in the field of environmental education.

Today was the children's last meeting for the club. We played a treasure hunt game that tested the children's knowledge and collected some columbine seeds. As well as the treasure, the children took home commemorative certificates and shared memories.
The whole year flew by like water, but it was beautiful. The children are going on holiday, but they will surely take away a lot of new experiences and skills which they will share with their friends there.

Harvesting a large portion of the field poppy seeds, just me. Nobody else fancied it on that beautiful Sunday afternoon 🤪
The poppy has ripened and started to shed from its pods, so it was necessary to collect it to have enough for the next season.
The bumblebees are doing splendidly. I saw several new queens. I cleaned out their entrance and was glad for the protective suit and hat. 🐝👒.
Newly established bee swarms are also thriving.
The garden is blooming nicely for us, it's a big change.
