How Čmeláci Plus supported the spread of bombusophilia in Liberec – 21/6/2019 – Čmeláci PLUS

A long story, but with a happy ending.

At the very beginning there was a message from Petr. Petr wrote to us at the beginning of April that his mother is a teacher who wants to get bumblebees for the children, but she can't manage to get any settled. Many of us were trying to do the same thing at the time, but my nose told me that it was a little different.

So I contacted Peter's mother, teacher Barbora Melicharová, and it was confirmed to me that this was a case worth helping. Mrs. Melicharová was ready, she did everything she should have, she just needed a little luck and time to make it work. We quickly agreed within the team that we were going to do it.

At that time, unlike the rest of us, Karl had queen bumblebees flying in his garden. Karel is an experienced breeder and he soon managed to settle a queen, which he jokingly named "Libuna". However, we agreed that we would let her settle in well and only take her to Liberec with the first workers. This was followed by sudden changes in the weather, which slowed down or even destroyed many nests. But Libuna was put in the care of Karl (he is actually a doctor), raised the first workers and everything worked out.

On Saturday, June 1, 2019, on International Children's Day, I went with the hive to Liberec. Mrs. Melicharová and I agreed that the children would also arrive and I would tell them something about bumblebees. Libuna and her family were relaxing in the back seat of the Skoda, comfortably on a cushion (the bumblebee safety seat is not yet produced), fastened with a seat belt - safety above all.

When we arrived at the agreed address, it was a very nice surprise. Not only were there tons of children there, but also their parents and the teacher. Above all, it was a beautiful place for bumblebees, a small paradise – a large school garden, flowering trees and bushes, tall grass full of flowers. There were also other places for insects, birds and animals – shady corners, piles of branches as natural shelters, stumps left to nature, drinking fountains, etc. There were also various play areas, boards with lessons. Parents, children and teachers were working in the garden, and nature was all around. Well, I have to admit, I was glad that Libuna and I were here today. This is a project worth supporting!

As I said, teacher Melicharová was well prepared and had chosen a place for the shelter – nicely in the shade of the trees, where the sun only shines for a short while in the morning. We placed the shelter on an elevated spot, under a flowering weigela. So everything was perfect (unfortunately, the teacher didn’t have her student’s book with her…).

We set the hive in place together and waited for the nest to calm down after the transport. In the meantime, the children arrived, mostly fifth-graders and their parents. We talked to them about bumblebees for a while, but then it was more of a discussion. The children and their parents were genuinely interested and knew a lot about bumblebees - thanks to the teacher Mrs. Melicharová and the "natural history" teacher Mrs. Alena Šáfrová. I described to them what would happen when we opened the previously closed flap. We all stepped back a little and fell silent. Of course, I had a little soul inside me, I didn't want to disappoint the children, that would be terrible - hell.
But Libuna, whom the children had long ago renamed Amálka, did not disappoint. Within 5 minutes, she sent her daughters out to their new home and bumblebee paradise. We didn't even count how many workers made a beautiful demonstration flight. Within 10 minutes the first one came back, then another and another. Well….everything just worked out as it should. Beautiful, beautiful.

We were all happy – the children received a gift for Children's Day, the teachers' dream came true and so did we, the Bumblebees PLUS. After all, what more can be done than to support teachers who ignite the flames of interest in nature in children. And most importantly, to do something for its protection and our coexistence with it.
Teachers Melicharová, Šáfrová and certainly others do a lot and deserve our admiration. It gave all of us who work here for you and for the bumblebees a lot of energy for our further work.

As you know, Ála, Ája, Jaromír, Honza, Karel, Jakub, I and the others do everything out of enthusiasm and without any claim to compensation. But sometimes we get some rewards.

We thank teachers Barbora Melicharova and Alena Šáfrova and everyone from the elementary school in Liberec for everything they do for the children.
We thank the children and their parents for letting themselves be set on fire. We wish them all the best for Amálka in that bumblebee paradise.

Our common story also reached the media, and so the report on the bumblebees in the elementary school also appeared on the iDnes . Also watch the video report , which is part of the article.

Discussion "Bumblebees, our furry friends" 22/8/2020 - Pavlína Krčová

Pavlína organized an event for children in the summer of 2020.

Although the invitation said "farewell to the holidays", it was actually an invitation to the wonderful world of bumblebees and events in the grass.

It was conceived as a lecture for local children about bumblebees. The originally planned one hour turned into three hours of talking with children and parents. Nevertheless, it went by like clockwork.

Pavlína captivated the children not only with her story as an enthusiastic bumblebee lover, but also with demonstrations of a bumblebee hive, a small competition for prizes, and a beautiful film about bumblebees. The children were also asked some simple questions and took home small souvenirs.

The mayor still has a bulletin board with the photos that Pavlína used.

The original report can be found on Facebook Čmeláci PLUS – Discussion forum HERE

We used Pavlína's idea and experience for our first worksheet . The materials are available to you.

Czech School Without Borders Rhein-Main leads children to protect nature

Introduction

None of us thought that our work would go beyond the borders of a few enthusiasts, or even the borders of the Czech Republic.
why we were very surprised when Anička contacted us all the way from Germany.
But as you can see, enthusiasts and hard-working people come together and don't care about borders - why should they?
We chatted a bit and lo and behold - they cut out a beautiful project about bumblebees. It's probably because it's not their first and certainly not their last project.
So please read how the Czech School Without Borders Rhein-Main manages to ignite children, what program to prepare for them and how to attract young hearts to nature conservation through play.

Don't say it leaves you cold, that something similar couldn't be prepared at your school as well. "-)

Thank you Anička and her team - Vielen Dank und wir freuen uns auf die weitere Zusammenarbeit !

About the school

The world is full of clever and hardworking Czechs who are happy to claim their nationality and it is important for them to pass on their culture and language to their children. The network of Czech schools is growing rapidly around the world, some children stay abroad, others return to the Czech Republic, but they have one thing in common, they learn to understand where they come from. This has been the case here in Frankfurt for 10 years!

Nature conservation knows no boundaries and can be beautifully and meaningfully combined with language learning.

About school projects

In October 2021, we moved to new premises with a garden and a nearby forest, which gave free rein to our imagination. The euphoria of new possibilities for the tenth anniversary of our school was almost stifled by the Covid pandemic. But all bad things come for a good reason, because the bag of webinars and lectures where we could draw inspiration for practice to our heart's content, despite being trapped at home in front of screens, burst.

Whether you read about the world of "Bumblebees Plus" or Deutschland summt, there is a common belief that even the smallest support for nature conservation in schools counts. You don't have to dig up the entire schoolyard to get children on a path to nature.

We obtained permission from the school building administrator to establish a small flower meadow, which we managed to implement on Earth Day, but unfortunately with almost no participation from the children.

At the same time, the idea of celebrating International Bee Day was born. As we all know, bumblebees also belong to the bee family, so we celebrated International Bee Day with bumblebees.

Because we were grateful for every day of attendance this year and avoided indoor classes, we set up camp in the school garden. Every week we prepared some sprouted plants and water for watering. We named the flowerbed “The Bumblebee Restaurant”. It was amazing to watch the interest with which the children threw themselves into planting and caring for their sunflowers, lemon balm, strawberries, and even tomatoes. The children came running in the morning to check how their plants were doing after a week and whether they needed watering. Every Saturday we studied how meadow flowers grow from seeds. The students were also interested in the insects that visited the restaurant and occasionally we came across a larva. We managed to create the perfect mycelium for a deeper understanding of the “flying stuffed animals”.

At this point, I would like to sincerely thank the authors of Bumblebees PLUS for their worksheets and valuable recommendations for school activities. We paid great attention to the life of a bumblebee. The children learned that, especially in spring, we must pay attention to mothers who have awakened and are looking for a home, and what to do if one wanders into our house. The children already knew that we do not need to be afraid of bumblebees, but they were quite surprised by how many species of bumblebees there are and that there are often big visual differences between them. Since we are a Czech school, we also paid attention to vocabulary. Its continuous expansion is our great permanent mission. Finally, we got to creating. The children made paper bumblebees that they could take home, and several of them were given a place of honor on the windows of our classroom.

Although we have already said goodbye to the school year, we will be watching with excitement to see if we "bipeds" will be able to harvest something from the Čmeldí restaurant after the holidays.

Bumblebee breeding in the garden of Úhonice Elementary School and Kindergarten

  • From 2021 We provide bumblebee breeding in cooperation with the school management.

    Úhonice Elementary School and Kindergarten

  • In 2021, the rock bumblebee was successfully bred here, and 2022 was successfully completed with the breeding of the meadow bumblebee.
  • In 2023, not only we, but also the children, will hope for a return and self-establishment of the hive. The meadow bumblebee is an ideal species for schools, because by the end of the school year, children will have time to learn most of the life cycle.
  • The breeding takes place in a hive of our own production (instructions are available here) . Excellent thermal insulation allowed the hive to be placed in the school's front garden, where it is visible not only to children, but also to visitors and parents of the school.
  • Through breeding, we promote and educate not only about the life of bumblebees, but also the importance of protecting the areas that provide them with food.
  • The school itself, with the help of parents and children, significantly transformed the garden last year. A number of environmental elements have been added, the original drab garden has been enriched with an adventure trail, an insect house, an herb garden, and a meadow is planned in place of the original lawn and water features that will be used not only by children. The entire garden is thus undergoing a gradual transformation towards ecological education for children, where our bumblebees are a suitable addition.
  • Our project is a long-term event that we are able to expand with other activities according to the needs and requirements of the school.
  • school website here

The hive also includes an information panel on the roof of the hive for children and casual visitors

The next generation of meadow bumblebees was successfully bred in 2022, so we will expect a return in 2023
