Thanks
The project is implemented with financial support from the City of Prague.
We would like to thank all parties who enabled us to prepare the project, go through the demanding preparation, and who selected the project for implementation.
But we want to thank everyone who participates in and supports the project.
Julie and the project team
About the project – introduction
We are glad that we managed to involve more entities united by a common interest - to do something for nature in cities and to light a torch of enthusiasm in the young generation that will carry it forward.

Project objectives and content
The school's long-term goal is to support research-based education at the Fraternal School and expand outdoor teaching opportunities.
- The aim of the project is therefore
to expand grazing for insect pollinators - supporting the increase in their status. - education and dissemination of information about insect pollinators – creation of educational info panels to popularize the topic of insect pollinators: bumblebees, solitary bees (social bees), honey bees
- running a club dedicated to the topic of insect pollinators.
Project content
The project involves running a club dedicated to the care of school bee colonies, with an emphasis on caring for the surrounding greenery and the maximum nutritional capacity of the school garden with a view to preserving the biodiversity of other representatives of pollinating insects such as bumblebees and solitary bees.
In cooperation with experts, we want to raise awareness of the topic among school teachers, parents of students, residents of Prague 7, and the general public who simply pass through the Prague 7 Metropolitan District.
By implementing lectures, ecological educational programs, field work on the property (parent brigades) and creating educational information panels, we want to work beyond the boundaries of the school property and thus be an example of good practice, where a community of people together creates and cares for a place that is important to them at a certain stage of life.
The professional consultant for the creation of educational materials and provision of lectures for adults in this project is the association Čmeláci PLUS, zs . as well as Pražská pastvina .
Electronic copies of the created educational materials will be offered free of charge to other schools, educational institutions and the public for non-commercial use – on the websites of the Fraternal School and the Čmeláci PLUS .
Project team
This is the main part of the project team. But more and more people are gradually joining the project..

Julia
Julie Včeláková – Ekodomov
Time spent in nature has always been important to me, even though its form has changed over the years.
With the birth of two children, time spent outdoors seemed even more important.
My name brought me to bees, since childhood they called me "Včelko". But I only got to know the living ones with my children.
Thanks to Martin Semerád, founder of the Srdcevčele association and my first beekeeping teacher.
Together we did beekeeping camps for children and I enjoyed that. Inventing games, trails and organizing.
Since 2021 I have been working as a coordinator and lecturer of environmental education in the EKODOMOV organization

Vojtech
Vojtěch Koštíř – Prague Pasture
He is studying biology at the Faculty of Science of Charles University. In 2016, he co-founded the Prague Pasture association, which combines community grazing of sheep and goats with the care of valuable protected areas. Today, the association also focuses on species protection of butterflies (e.g. the blue or rock butterfly) and the care of an old orchard with a community apiary.
He also works as an editor for the TV show "Don't give up!", where he draws attention to important causes and problems related to the environment. He manages to get young people interested in biology excited about nature at lectures and excursions for high school students.

Andrew
Ondřej Hercog – Čmeláci PLUS zs
He works in the field of IT and information security. He is actively involved in the protection and promotion of nature.
He has been interested in nature since he was a child. Although he chose a technical education and career for his life, he keeps returning to nature more and more, and bumblebees are one of those paths.
He is a founding member of the group and subsequently of the association Čmeláci PLUS zs, of which he is also the chairman. He actively promotes the activities of the association in the public and in the media.
How did it start?
If you don't know, just ask the source: " Julie, please tell us how you got the idea to start this project?" and it's clear right away.
Julie answered us: "When our daughter started going to the Fratrská škola, I was captivated by the garden, the former park by the train station. It felt like paradise there.
I immediately had an idea for an outdoor classroom with beehives, and because the principal had had the same wish for a long time, the beehives were there within a year, thanks to Vojta Koštíř from Pražská pastvina.
Thanks to my friendship with an experienced bumblebee breeder, Jaromír Čížek, I have been fascinated by these furry pollinators with a number of super abilities for a few years now.
So it seemed natural to me that students at school and passersby should also become aware of the importance of a diverse composition of pollinators.
Thanks to the work of the Bratrská Parents' Association, beds of perennials and herbs were created in the 2023/2024 school year. Thanks to them, we were able to observe other pollinators on the coneflowers this summer: long-billed beetles, bumblebees, butterflies and honey bees.
This project therefore naturally follows on from previous initiatives, with which we want to revive the garden and support a blooming oasis of greenery at the school.”
Julie modestly kept quiet about the work involved in paperwork and project applications.
"Hey Ondra, what about you?" we ask further.
Ondra is also clear: "If someone like my friend Jaromír approaches you and offers to collaborate with someone named Včeláková, there's nothing to worry about. No seriously - after a while on the phone with Julia, it was clear that there was chemistry. Plus, Vojta was already involved, so it went quickly and we hit it off."
But curiosity gets the better of us, so we ask Vojta how he met Julia.
Vojta thinks and remembers: "We already knew Rosta, the director of the Fraternal School. When Julie came with the bees, he asked me if I would bring a few compartments. And now I'm happy that it doesn't end with just building hives somewhere, but that we will also create a space for the life of not only bees, but especially wild pollinators. Soon we will sow a meadow, prepare a mixture tailored for bumblebees and for the garden, so hopefully within two years a nice meadow with daisies, sage and also cockscomb, which is literally a magnet for bumblebees, will bloom there."
So you see, people often meet by chance and fate. But that doesn't mean they can't launch and realize something interesting.
So please keep your fingers crossed for us.

YEAR 2024 – Blog
28/9/2024 – Let's get started!
Today we finally got together – Julie, Ondra and Vojta.
We walked through the garden at the Bratrská railway station and made plans. The director also arrived to introduce us.
We are preparing a proposal for replanting the garden. We have also agreed to add shrubs to the garden.
Vojta is in charge of the seeds, preparing information signs for the public, and giving lectures.
Vojta selects bushes and draws areas for honey plants on the plan.
We plan the dates of our events in the garden, but also seminars.
Ondra took photos of the current state of the garden so we could compare it with what it will look like next year.
O.
PS. Vojta is a staunch enemy of signs, so hopefully it will pass 😀

Vojta is already choosing seeds, shrubs and trees for the plot. It may not seem like much, but it's a lot of work.
We also want to plant a cockerel on the plot, but it won't wait - it has to be in the ground until frost. Maybe we'll see similar shots in the spring - in the center of Prague, near the Metro station.

2/10/2024
Hooray – Julie has found a place for our first lecture. She has also made a poster, so we are starting active promotion.
We are also preparing a lecture that Vojta will give and you won't want to miss it. Did you know that Vojta has already spoken at the Senate in the Czech Republic and it didn't matter at all that he didn't wear a suit and tie, but just his famous T-shirt?
You can find the invitation to the event on the Čmeláci PLUS FB page here

Bumblebee Seminar – Invitation
8/10/2024
We are getting ready for the first event. The first garden work will start next week. Julie reports the seedlings and the seeds are ready.
Vojta will also provide others, although it is more difficult now - his family grew last week!

10/10/2024
Vojta brought some plant seedlings that we will use to complete the garden. Julie and the children deposited them and the children will water them so that they will last until we put them in place.
It's great that the children are involved, after all, this is a project for them.

Julie has mowed part of the garden to get it ready for planting. The children will help with the digging, it's a project for them and it's nice to get them involved.
After sowing, the seeds are covered with a net, otherwise pigeons would feed there, and we don't really have a goal for this project 😀

Things go quickly with children – they rush to work and it's done right away. Vojta will be happy.
We raked up the mowed parts and fixed a net on the sowing area for the birds. After all, we won't feed them with precious seeds, will we?

Today there was a lecture about bumblebees. The lecturers were Julie and Ondra.
The participants learned about our project from Julie, the motivation for its launch, and the plans. Ondra then started talking about bumblebees, their lives, and how we can help them.
Even though there weren't many participants, those who came were very nice and active.
We are planning the next lecture in the spring, ideally right in the garden.
Thanks to the Prague 7 City Hall for the opportunity to use their beautiful spaces.

It's cold, but we're not sleeping. Vojta and Julie are working on information signs for the project. Well...Vojta has a hard time with the word "information sign", but what wouldn't he do for Julie..
26/11/2025
Last week we were finishing smaller holes in the insect hotel "At the Old Totem". Someone took away one of the chains that held it in place, but it is still standing strong.
Someone must have been ripped off the chain. But maybe someone will get the chain soon...

This is what it currently looks like – hooray, bulbs are already coming out of the ground.
We don't know about the bushes, planted last year.
The vine doesn't look like much, it wasn't in good shape when I brought it, but we'll give it a chance.
I'd like to put some protection around the bushes so that the kids don't accidentally step on it.
Oh my - the totem pole is on the ground. They stole both chains one by one. That's how I see it. I hope no one will be tempted by it
🤦
I also check the nets that protect the sown areas and fortunately it is also a bug

Finally, our group is back in action!
The brigade had to move a week due to rain and snow. But the hardy guys from Pražská pastvina built us a two-chamber composter even in this bad weather. Thanks to this, we will reduce our carbon footprint - the mowed material ends up on the property and you don't have to take it anywhere.
Vojta promises that there will eventually be goldenrod larvae in the compost, so we have to figure out what to feed them here.
Composters may also find another use - instead of having children stay in the composter after school. We found out that they would really enjoy that.
Let's go check out the hive, it's an adventure for everyone!
The children and I took a peek at the supplies of a dead bee colony and reminded ourselves of the food sources in early spring. The children enjoy it, it gives us energy, or is it spring sap?

We postponed our original plans for this event because the weather was not in our favor. Vojta and Matouš are hardy, so they worked here a week ago. We have school obligations and the parents only arrived today.
A big thank you to all the parents and students for the care they gave to the school garden - great job
We raked up the leftover leaves, weeded the perennial beds, installed a border for the annual bed, beautifully bordered the sown areas of non-pollinated and pollinating plants, gave new handles to the children's hoes, installed information panels about pollinating insects, and bordered the bushes planted in the fall, and sowed chickpeas.
Big thanks to everyone!!!

Good news!
I'm preparing a beehive for the garden in the garden in Radlice. It looks like a bumblebee has settled in it and is returning. You can tell by the mark in the entrance hole. If it returns, it will throw away the mark. The photo shows the flap of the beehive for Bratrská Elementary School and hooray – the mark is repeatedly out!

I haven't seen her yet, so at least watch the video of what she looks like. We'll replace it soon with a video of our queen.

I was negotiating a bumblebee project in Troja and my journey took me to Bratská by chance. The garden was closed, the children were locked in their classrooms and I had to struggle to get locked into the office..
At least I was pleased to see how well the garden was getting off to a good start and how much work had been done there.

Our queen bumblebee has already settled in the hive and spends the night there. This means that if everything goes well, she could have her first helpers – little workers – within a month. However, it is still a long way and it does not always succeed.
Do you know how it works with bumblebees? If not, just take a look at the bumblebee website and the bumblebee life cycle page .
Julie was given the task – to choose a name for this hottie with the kids from school. So, will you join in with your suggestions? If you leave it to Ondra, watch out – he already knows his suggestion!
And friends, be careful – Julii and I have just agreed that there will be christenings – that is, bumblebee ones!!!

Today, bumblebees arrived in the school garden!
We had planned it as a beehive talk, but in the end the weather was not on our side, so we met in the yurt.
There weren't many children, but there were still a lot of very interesting questions. Parents and other visitors also asked.
The weather cleared up, so we went outside and installed the hive.
We chatted for a long time and watched the first flights of the bumblebee workers. They first have to find their way around in order to return home. That was a success, too, so it was a great day and a joy for everyone.

As part of the project, we went to the Prague pasture, literally. This beautiful place is returning to the form when intensive grazing took place here, thanks to which there were a lot of steppe plants, but also insects. Enthusiasts from ČSOP Prague Pasture created a small paradise here by controlled grazing and cleaning of invasive woody plants.
We had beautiful weather and enjoyed the fresh air. Our great guide Vojta enjoyed it too. Why did he like the fresh air? Well.. ask him! You can see it in the last photo. 😀
Vojta is at home here. Moreover, he was one of the first to start working here, which is why he is the right guide to this beautiful place.
You can read about Prague Pasture on their website https://prazskapastvina.cz/
If you didn't make it there with us, go there yourself - it's worth it!

Today was the last meeting of the children at the club. We played a treasure hunt game that tested the children's knowledge and collected a few cockerel seeds. In addition to the treasure, the children took home commemorative certificates and shared experiences.
The whole year flew by, but it was beautiful. The children will go on vacation, but they will definitely take away a lot of new experiences and knowledge that they will pass on to their friends.

Harvesting a large portion of the cocklebur seeds, just me. On that beautiful Sunday afternoon, no one else wanted to 🤪
The cocklebur ripened and started to fall out of its pods, so it was necessary to collect it so that there would be enough for the next season.
The bumblebees are doing great. I saw several new queens. I cleaned their flyer and was happy for the protective coveralls and hat. 🐝👒.
The newly established bee swarms are also thriving.
Our garden is blooming nicely, which is a big change.
Long live summer!
